This workshop will explain the steps taken to create and implement a curriculum for Spanish Language Arts 1 course. In addition we will discuss the objectives, methodology, content and strategies to support students to succeed in this course. We will explain the areas of difficulty and improvements that will be taken into consideration to create and implement the curriculum for SLA 2, 3, and 4. Furthermore we will explore innovative strategies for teaching Spanish Language Arts, focusing on the interconnected aspects of student development. Discover how to:
- Foster literacy skills through phonemic awareness, decoding, and fluency techniques
- Develop academic skills through vocabulary building, word analysis, and writing workshops
- Integrate authentic cultural resources and materials to promote cultural awareness and understanding
- Exploring Literature in context (analyzing literature.)
-Preparing students for regents examinations and AP Language and Culture, and Literature and Culture.

If the idea of using a comprehensible novel with your students is daunting, this presentation is for you. Spanish teacher and author, Jennifer Degenhardt, will take you through the necessary steps to plan the novel, La chica nueva. You will be awarded a copy of the novel in the session (other languages available, too) and great ideas to use with it, so you can work to bring the story to life right away! In this workshop, we will showcase a collaborative project developed with Stony Brook University and the Three Village Central School District in collaboration with the Italian Consulate in NY. The material and activities, while highly creative and engaging, align with the NYS Standards and can be used with all levels. Participants in the workshop will have access to online resources and methodological guidance to implement the project with their students. While the project was created for Italian language classes , this workshop offers teachers of other languages the opportunity to develop similar projects in their own language.
